First Things First – Know Which Alibaba Cloud You’re Dealing With
Alibaba has two separate platforms. Don’t mix them up.
International Site: alibabacloud.com – USD payments, virtual cards work.
China Site: aliyun.com – RMB only, requires Chinese ID verification, virtual cards are basically useless.
This guide is only for the international site.
If you’re trying to use the China site, you’re out of luck with virtual cards. Just go through their regular process.
Step 1: Sign Up for Alibaba Cloud International
Go to https://www.alibabacloud.com
Click the sign-up button in the top right.
Use Gmail or Outlook for your email.
Why?
International platforms trust international email providers more. Simple as that.
Pick Individual Account when signing up.
For region, here’s a pro tip: choose Hong Kong or Singapore.
You could pick US too, but Hong Kong servers give you better latency if you’re in Asia. Singapore’s solid too.
Identity verification? Upload your passport if you have one. Driver’s license works too.
You can actually skip verification at first and use trial services.
But if you want to buy anything for real, you’ll need to verify eventually.
Step 2: Get Your Virtual Card Sorted
This is the critical part.
There are tons of virtual card platforms out there. Most of them are garbage.
I’ve tried 7 or 8 different ones. Now I only use Pikabao.

Log into your Alibaba Cloud console.
Find Billing Management.
Click Add Payment Method.
Enter your virtual card details:

For billing address, just use a Hong Kong or Singapore address.
It doesn’t have to be super accurate, just needs to match the format.
For Hong Kong, write something like Central District, Some Street.
For Singapore, Orchard Road works.
Google a real address if you want to be safe.

If it goes through, that dollar gets refunded in a few days.

Step 4: Buy Your Server or Domain
Card linked successfully? Time to actually purchase something.
Buying a Server
Go to your console, find Elastic Compute Service (ECS).
Click Create Instance.
Pick your config:
Region: Hong Kong or Singapore for lower latency if you’re in Asia.
Specs: 1 core, 1GB RAM is enough to start – costs a few bucks a month.
Billing: First time? Go with pay-as-you-go.
Why?
Pay-as-you-go means you can stop anytime without losing a year’s worth of prepayment.
If your virtual card gets flagged, you’re not out a ton of money.
Once you’ve tested and everything’s stable, switch to annual billing. It’s cheaper.
Hit Buy Now, pay with your linked virtual card.

Buying a Domain
Go to console, find Domain.
Search for the domain you want.
Like yourbrand.com
Add to cart, checkout.
Domains run $6-15 per year depending on the extension.
.com is priciest but most mainstream. .net is cheaper.
After payment, don’t forget to do identity verification.
Your domain won’t work without it.
Upload your passport or driver’s license photo. Usually approved within a few hours.
Common Problems, Real Solutions
Payment Failed
Possibility 1: Not enough balance on your card.
Fix: Go top up your Pikabao card. Add $20 to be safe.
Possibility 2: Virtual card flagged as prepaid.
Fix: This is rare, but if it happens, contact Pikabao support for a different card.
Possibility 3: Billing address doesn’t match account region.

Check if you typed the card number, expiration, or CVV wrong.

Make sure your card status is active.
Some virtual cards need manual activation after opening. Won’t work otherwise.
Still not working? Clear your browser cache or try a different browser.
Chrome not working? Try Edge or Safari.

Domain Won’t Resolve After Purchase
99% of the time, this is because you didn’t verify your identity.
Even though it’s the international site, domains still need to comply with ICANN rules.
Verification is mandatory.
Go to domain console, complete verification.
Then configure your DNS records.

Can’t Connect to Server After Purchase
Check your security group settings.
Alibaba Cloud’s default security groups block most ports.
You need to manually open port 22 (SSH) and whatever other ports you need.
Also, make sure your IP isn’t blocked.
If you bought servers in accessible regions (Hong Kong, Singapore), you’re usually fine.
But if you went with US or Europe nodes, sometimes the IP quality is bad and gets blocked.
In that case, you’ll need to change IPs or switch nodes.
