1. Know Which Alibaba Cloud You’re Using
Alibaba Cloud comes in two versions. A lot of people mix them up.
China Domestic (aliyun.com): Billed in RMB, requires real-name verification, only accepts domestic Chinese bank cards.
International (alibabacloud.com): Billed in USD, accepts credit cards, available to users worldwide.
This guide is about the international version. The two platforms are completely separate — accounts don’t carry over. Don’t get them confused.
2. Register an International Account
Go to https://www.alibabacloud.com and click Sign Up in the top right corner.
A few tips for registration:
- Use Gmail or Outlook. Domestic Chinese email providers sometimes miss verification emails.
- Select Individual as your account type.
- Set your region to Hong Kong or Singapore. Approval goes more smoothly.
- Real-name verification accepts a passport or driver’s license. Some services work without it.
After registering, don’t rush to buy anything. Sort out your payment method first.
3. Choosing the Right Virtual Credit Card
The international platform requires Visa or Mastercard. It also has detection mechanisms that can identify and reject prepaid cards.
Pick the wrong card and the binding will fail — even if you’ve already topped it up.

4. Linking Your Virtual Card to Alibaba Cloud
Log in to the international site and go to the console.
Navigation path: Profile icon (top right) → Billing Management → Payment Methods → Add Payment Method.
Fill in the following:
- Card number (copy it from your Pikabao card page)
- Expiry date (month/year)
- CVV (3-digit security code)
- Billing address (Pikabao provides this — paste it in exactly as shown)
After submitting, the system will run a small test charge to verify. It gets refunded automatically if successful.
Card not binding? Check these three things first:
First, the billing address must match the region your card is registered to. Don’t fill it in randomly.
Second, your Alibaba Cloud account’s country/region setting must match the card. Set both to Hong Kong or Singapore.
Third, keep at least $10 USD on the card. Below that, the verification will almost certainly fail.
5. Buying a Server (ECS)
Search for Elastic Compute Service in the console and click Create Instance.
A few key choices to consider:
Region: Hong Kong and Singapore offer fast access speeds for users in Asia and are cheaper than European or American nodes.
Billing method: For your first purchase, go with Pay-As-You-Go. You only pay for what you use, and you can release the instance immediately after testing. Once you’ve confirmed the virtual card charges correctly, then consider switching to a monthly or annual plan.
Specs to start with: 1 vCPU / 1GB RAM is enough to run basic applications. Fine for personal websites or test environments.
Choose your configuration → Buy Now → Pay with your linked virtual card.
6. Buying a Domain
Navigation path: Console → Domain & Website → Domains.
Search for the domain name you want. Common extensions:
- .com — most universally recognized, around $12–15/year
- .net — common for tech projects, around $10–13/year
- .cloud — Alibaba Cloud’s own featured extension, tends to be cheaper

Important: you must complete identity verification before your domain will work.
Go to the domain console and upload a photo of your passport or ID. Review usually takes 1–3 business days. Without passing verification, DNS resolution won’t take effect and your site won’t load.
7. Common Problems — With Actual Solutions
Payment fails
Reason 1: Insufficient balance. Top up to at least $15 USD and try again.
Reason 2: Card is identified as a prepaid card and gets rejected. Switch to Pikabao — its cards are categorized as credit cards, not prepaid, which significantly improves success rates.
Reason 3: Billing address entered incorrectly. Use exactly the address provided by Pikabao. Don’t improvise.
Can’t add a payment method
Your account’s registered region doesn’t match the card’s region.
Go to account settings, change the country/region to Hong Kong, then try adding the card again. This fixes most cases.
Domain purchased but website won’t load
Two things to check:
One — identity verification hasn’t been approved yet. Check the verification status in your domain console.
Two — DNS isn’t configured. Go to your DNS settings and point the A record to your server’s IP address.
Server purchased but can’t connect
Go to Security Group settings and open the following ports: port 22 (SSH), port 80 (HTTP), port 443 (HTTPS). The default security group may have all of these blocked.
8. Wrap-Up
The entire process has one real obstacle: payment.
Users without access to international credit cards are stuck. Regular debit cards don’t work.
